The physics faculty are active, year-round researchers, including Centennial Scholars, and frequently involve students in their work.

One faculty member is using laser spectroscopy to study ultra-fast molecular dynamics in liquid mixtures – in a high-tech laser lab right on campus. Another physicist uses balloon satellites to measure a variety of physical properties of the atmosphere up to altitudes of 100,000 feet. With students, he builds and tests instruments for the balloon payloads that are launched several times a year.

Adding to this level of personalized education is innovative technology – including the department’s Van de Graaf microparticle accelerator is used to simulate the physical and chemical processes caused by impacts of interplanetary dust particles on spacecraft. It is one of only four such accelerators in the world.
